Stumpy the old deputy with the scatter gun..  

This old cantankerous character was played by Walter Brennon. Mr Brennon was fairly well known for playing parts in westerns and the character of Stumpy features in a John Wayne film Rio Bravo. However he was actually a three times Oscar winner and so deserves to take his place in a few scenarios.
