Wearing canvas trooping smocks
The 74th Highlanders deployed to the 8th Cape Frontier War in 1851 and remained to the end. Their dress was unique. They wore their regimental trews (Lamont tartan) and canvas trooping smocks, dyed down from their original cream-white colour using boiled mimosa bark. See the full uniform guide at the 'Historical Notes' drop down menu. The set includes a kneeling sergeant, indicating a target (sixth in from the right). The 74th were heavily involved in the several attempts to clear and secure the Waterkloof stronghold. Additionally one company of the regiment took an active part in the Battle of Berea in Lesotho, (while 3 other companies were guarding the nearby British encampment).
