This set is designed to provide the command element for the 44th (East Essex) Regiment during the fighting around Kabul, prior to the disastrous retreat of January 1842, although the figures can be put to many other uses besides. 1st Anglo-Afghan War. Left to right: Indian bhisti, drummer, lieutenant, captain or major, 2 ensigns, Colonel John Shelton, private, adjutant or company officer saluting (or he might equally be shading his eyes), 2 x sergeants, subaltern, drummer, the sergeant-major.
